Police are investigating a motor vehicle crash involving a bicyclist that occurred earlier today.
Police say at around 2:00pm, officers responded to the portion of Grand Central Avenue located between Clemens Center Parkway Extension and East McCanns Blvd. for a reported crash. On arrival, officer found an adult male who had been struck and was seriously injured. A witness to the crash remained on scene and rendered first aid to the victim, however the driver of the vehicle which struck the bicyclist had left the scene.
A second witness observed the vehicle, reported to have extensive damage, traveling north on Grand Central Ave. in an erratic manner. The witness called 911 and remained on the line with dispatchers while following the vehicle. The suspect attempted to elude the witness but was unsuccessful. The vehicle was stopped by Elmira Heights Police.
Police arrested 40 year old Sara E. Harnas and charged her with Leaving The Scene Of An Accident and 1st Degree Aggravated Unlicensed Operation, a Class E felony. According to Elmira Police, the investigation is ongoing.
Harnas was arraigned in the Elmira City Court and remanded to the Chemung County Jail.
This morning police have identified the bicyclist as 68 yer old Charles G. Rogers of Elmira. Police say Rogers died as a result of his injuries shortly after arriving at the Arnot Ogden Medical Center.
Additional charges are expected to be filed against Harnas.
