An Elmira man is in jail after police say a traffic stop turned into a foot chase in West Elmira.
On Sunday evening just before 6:00 pm West Elmira Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Redfield Drive and W Water Street. The vehicle pulled into a private driveway on Redfield Drive and the driver than fled on foot into the neighboring yards. The officer pursued the person and called for back up.
Officers from Elmira Police Department, Chemung County Sheriff’s Office, and New York State Police, including a K-9 unit responded. The driver was located in the backyard of a residence on River Road and was arrested. The driver originally provided a false name but after his true identity was discovered the Police learned there was an Active Arrest Warrant for Santiago out of the City of Elmira.
Police charged 27 Shawn L. Santiago of Elmira with Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd Degree, Criminal Impersonation 2nd Degree, Obstructing Governmental Administration, and Resisting Arrest.
Santiago will appear in the Town of Elmira Court on May 1,2019 to answer the charges. Santiago was then turned over to the Elmira City Police on the active warrant for Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd degree and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana 5th degree.
Police say a passenger in Santiago’s vehicle was interviewed and released, and no injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
