Police are investigating a burglary and series of drive by shootings that occurred at a residence in the City of Elmira.
According to Elmira Police, on Monday morning at around 3:30 am, police were called to a residence in the 300 block of East Center Street for a burglary in progress. When police arrived, they were told that two individuals were seen running from the area. The resident told police that a safe containing a large sum of money had been stolen. The resident also turned over a loaded handgun that had been allegedly left behind by one of the perpetrators.
This morning at around 4:00 am, a drive by shooting at the same residence was reported. Police say several rounds struck and entered the residence. One of those rounds went through a bedroom window where a five year old child was sleeping. The bullet was was found lodged in a dresser.
A short time later, around 6:30 am, another drive by shooting happened. This time, a vehicle was targeted and struck several times.
Police say these acts do not appear to be random, rather, focused on a specific group of area residents. Two of the residents were victims of a home invasion robbery that happened on June 5th at a home on McDowell Place. That home is also owned by one of the targeted individuals now residing on East Center Street.
The victims continue to tell police they do not know why they are being targeted or by whom. Police say the victims have not provided any “actionable” information at this time.
The investigation continues and police ask that anyone with information call (607) 737-5626 or leave an anonymous message on the department’s tip line at (607) 271-HALT.
