Traffic Pattern Changes In Elmira Postpones Until July 15th

Traffic pattern changes set to begin today, July 8, in the “North Main Street Cultural Connector Project Corridor” have been postponed until the week of July 15th, according to a release from Director of Elmira DPW Andy Avery.

According to Avery, head of Department of Public Works, all Park Place traffic between West Third and West Clinton Streets will be detoured onto North Main Street until early September. Travel on North Main Street between West Third and West Clinton Streets will temporarily operate as 2-way traffic, flowing in both directions during this period.

That section of North Main Street will revert back to one-way travel once construction is complete.

Avery says that variable message signs and detour signage are in place to help drivers travel through the corridor. He also reminds drivers to please drive safely, and allow extra time in the event of construction delays.

  1. Thank goodness they are finally starting this project. The traffic is so heavy in downtown Elmira this roundabout is definitely needed to alleviate the congestion. Also, tearing down viable businesses to make this project happen has helped relieve additional burden on the overused streets in Elmira. Elmira needs to continue to evict successful businesses and tear down buildings if they are ever going to be among the top cities in the world. Another advantage is that Elmira finally gets to use millions of dollars in excess cash that was just going to waste. 40+ years into this program and look how vibrant downtown is.
