Back To Basics

Sometime around 2012 or 2013 I set out on this journey of web site administration with the explicit idea of providing hyperlocal news and civil conversation. The first version was “” which focused on the smaller, often overlooked rural communities in the Chemung County as well as Spencer and Candor. As time went on, the need for this in the greater Elmira/ Horseheads area became apparent and I decided to take a stab at it. Two websites eventually combined into one,

During the historic 2018 election cycle, became arguable the one reliable source for candidate profiles, election information and more. To keep up with that, the news page of the site changed to add legitimacy and a professional look to the site.

With the exception of the “Community Voices” section, the day to day operations of the site continues to be a one person operation. And while I’m certainly open to bringing on more help, it looks like it’ll be a “solo flight” for the foreseeable future.

With that in mind, I’m going to be getting back to the basics. Up until now the site’s provided state and regional news as well as news for Chemung County. In an effort to minimize screen time, the “State News” section will be removed. Instead, pertinent state news will be posted to the forums for discussion ( more on that later ). Regional news will remain, for now, but overall the site focus will be Chemung County.

“Community Voices” continues to be the gem of the site in my opinion, and I’ll do everything I can to add more writers, including the recent addition of a “Guest View” column where you can make your voice heard.

As for the Forums, while I thought they were the proverbial dead horse thanks to social media, survey responses indicate you prefer them over sites like Facebook. Therefore, while news will still be available on the front page, focus will return to the forums where we’ve seen an increase in pleasant, thoughtful conversation over recent weeks.

Speaking of survey responses, many indicated they either didn’t feel comfortable contributing to the topics or didn’t have anything to add. I assure you, your voice can and should be heard. Believe me, what is said here doesn’t go unnoticed. And while sometimes the conversation includes conflicting viewpoints, it’s always been civil. So I strongly encourage you to jump in the conversation. We want to hear from you!

Lastly, there’s no other way to put this: I’m sick of social media, namely, Facebook. It’s a fun thing at times but also a source of great frustration. So in the future, you’ll notice less posts on our page. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing new here, it just means I don’t want to deal with the social media side.

In closing, I am always open to ideas and suggestions. If you want to see something talked about, by all means, sign up and start a topic on the forum. Or, let me know and I’ll do my best to make it happen.

Have a great Summer, and as always, thanks for making a part of your day!
