A Buffalo man is behind bars after several cars were broken into over the past couple days.
On January 6th, 2019 the Elmira Police Department received a complaint of a vehicle and other property being stolen from a residence in the 400 block of Foster Ave.
On January 8th, 2019 the vehicle was located, parked and unoccupied, in West Elmira. On the same day, a suspect was developed by officers investigating the case. This individual was subsequently located and interviewed. Officers executed a search warrant at a residence within the City of Elmira, recovering several items reported as stolen and other items which were believed to be stolen.
Due to this investigation the Elmira Police Department arrested 18 year old Nathaniel P. Gilbert, of Buffalo, and charged him with Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a Class D felony.
Police say during this investigation, information was ascertained that numerous vehicles were entered recently on the Westside of Elmira. Several individuals have contacted the Elmira Police Department reporting this activity, some with property stolen and some with the vehicle just being entered with nothing taken. These incidents are still under investigation and further charges are forthcoming.
The Elmira Police Department would like to urge individuals that have experienced this activity on the Westside to report this to police. The Elmira Police Department would also urge Elmira City residents to be sure to lock their vehicles due to this type of behavior. The Elmira Police Department was assisted by the West Elmira Police Department in recovering this vehicle.
